We are at war.
They wait until almost dark to begin their attack. Using the cover of darkness, they unleash their vengeance and destruction. At first, I didn’t realize what was going on, but when I looked closely, I understood. We were under attack from the enemy.
Snails.
You know, those little slimy creatures? My new flowers I just planted are being destroyed by slugs! They have wreaked havoc on my flowers. The blooms are half-eaten, there are little holes in every one of them, and the leaves are munched down to almost nothing.
But I will not accept defeat. I’m fighting back. I’ve read all the things and tried several of them. Just yesterday, I put out coffee grounds and eggshells around the base of the plants to deter them. I picked off every one of them by hand and squished them. But what did I find when I went out to check my plants the next morning?
Snails.
Honestly, at one point, I felt like I might throw my hands up in defeat. But I reminded myself who’s truly in control here and prepared myself for the battle.
Today, my snail killer comes in, and I’ll be treating my flower beds. I’m here to remind those pesky critters that my flowers are not their food. I didn’t plant them and spend all this time on them just for their dinner.
The enemy will not win.
That’s a beautiful statement, isn’t it? Not just when we’re talking about the battle for the survival of our plants, but the battle for our souls and the Kingdom of God.
1 Thessalonians 2:17–18
“But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavored more eagerly to see your face with great desire. Therefore we wanted to come to you—even I, Paul, time and again—but Satan hindered us.”
We have an enemy. One who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy. He wants to prevent and devour anything good. Satan. The enemy of God. The one so full of pride that he believes he can defeat the Lord and stop His plan.
The Scripture doesn’t say what stopped Paul from going to visit the church again. It could have been an illness, something that disrupted their travel, or even continued attacks on the men themselves. Whatever it was, Paul knew it was the enemy trying to prevent the work of God.
But Paul knew whom he served. The God of all creation. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The Master, the Majestic One, the Maker of heaven and earth. The very One who breathed life into his lungs. The omnipotent and omniscient Great I AM!
Satan may have prevented him from traveling to them in person, but he didn’t stop this letter. And God used it in a great and mighty way. Because He speaks to us today through it.
The enemy will not win.
No matter what, the gospel will prevail.
Because Jesus Christ has already defeated the enemy.
That’s something worth shouting about!
Whatever you’re dealing with, whatever attack the enemy is hitting you with, remember, there is One stronger. Christ has already defeated Satan through His death on the cross. The victory has been won. With Jesus, you too have victory over the enemy.
1 John 4:4
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
No matter what comes at us in this life, if we have Jesus, we know where we will spend eternity. No attack from Satan can separate us from the love of God.
Romans 8:37–39
“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Believer, rest in knowing that whatever battle we are facing, Christ is the victor
