The door opened, and we stepped through.
We had just finished filming an upcoming episode featuring our missionaries and were headed to lunch. Phillip was shutting down the cameras, putting things back in place, and turning off the lights while I shared with him something Shaun and I had been praying about. Recent conversations had me wondering if my time at my current job might be coming to an end. It wasn’t something I was actively pursuing, but it had become a matter of prayer.
As we headed out of the studio, the Executive Director was talking with Shaun and me as he pushed open the door.
“I hear you’re thinking about a new job.”
Boy! News travels fast around here!
I laughed and said, “Well, I mentioned that it might be something I was considering. But nothing I’m actively pursuing.”
“I’ve got a job for you, and I think it’s in your wheelhouse. You’d be perfect for it. I want to talk to you about that at lunch.”
And with that, I stepped through the doorway.
This was how the conversation began about me coming to work full-time at Lifeword. I had no idea exactly what the job entailed, but there was an open door.
Shaun and I prayed about it. A lot.
I had a couple of conversations with Donny, and something he said to me then has stayed with me for years.
*”When God opens the door, run through it.”*
I loved the job I was in. I loved the students, the people, and the work. It was fulfilling, sometimes stressful, but deeply rewarding. I knew that job well. It was comfortable, familiar, and I could have happily stayed there for years.
But…
This was an open door.
For years, I had spent lunch breaks studying God’s Word, evenings preparing Sunday School lessons, and spare moments planning activities for my youth group.
What a dream it would be to do ministry full-time.
I wasn’t naïve. I knew it wouldn’t always be easy. Ministry comes with its own challenges. But to work at Lifeword…my goodness, what a dream.
And immediately, I felt unworthy.
Doubt crept in.
*Me? Surely there was someone more qualified. Why would anyone want to listen to me?*
“When God opens the door, run through it.”
Those words echoed in my mind.
Imagine how many people might hear the beautiful message of redemption through a story I shared. Imagine someone walking through a terrible season hearing the hope they desperately needed and turning to Christ. My tiny world suddenly became much bigger.
A message the world needs to hear.
A message about the One who saves.
A message about Jesus.
All because of one open door.

Years later, Paul’s prayer has become my own.
“Lord, keep opening doors.”
Doors into homes I may never physically enter. Doors into countries I may never visit. Doors into lives I may never meet this side of heaven. Because of the gift of technology, the gospel can walk through doors that we never could.
To share the truth.
Jesus Christ is the living God. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is our Redeemer and the hope of every nation. Though He possesses all authority, honor, and glory, He willingly left Heaven, took on flesh, and gave His life so that we could be reconciled to God.
Paul wasn’t asking for an easier life. He wasn’t praying for prison doors to open. He was praying for gospel doors to open.
He desired nothing more than opportunities to clearly proclaim Christ to people who desperately needed Him.
That has become our prayer as well.
Lord, open doors that we cannot.
Give us opportunities to share Your name.
Allow us to offer hope to someone who desperately needs it.
There is a huge world out there, and they need the truth of the gospel.
God is still opening doors every day—into conversations, friendships, workplaces, neighborhoods, and even across the world through technology.
The question isn’t whether God can open a door.
The question is whether you’ll walk through it.
As my friend once said,
“When God opens the door, run through it.”
