“Give me the Beach Boys and free my soul…”
I turned and looked at my husband with a puzzled expression.
“What did you say?”
The song continued playing on the radio, and he just kept singing.
“Give me the Beach Boys…”
“No,” I laughed. “It’s *give me the beat boys.*”
“Huh? I always thought it was Beach Boys.”
I’ve always loved music. Not just one genre—all kinds. Sometimes years go by without hearing a particular song, but the moment it starts playing, I can still sing every word.
Isn’t it amazing how music does that?
Melody has a remarkable way of activating our memory.
We’ve known this for a long time. Teachers often put lessons to music because children are much more likely to remember them that way. But elementary school teachers weren’t the first to discover this principle.
Paul wrote to the church in Colossians:
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” *Colossians 3:16*
Think about the believers Paul was writing to. Most of the New Testament had not yet been written or widely circulated. So how were Christians to learn about the life of Jesus, His teachings, and the truth of the gospel?
The teachings of Jesus were memorized and faithfully passed from one generation to the next. Music became one of the powerful ways God’s truth was learned, remembered, and shared.
When Paul encouraged believers to teach one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, he wasn’t simply talking about singing during worship services. He was reminding them that music could be a tool for discipleship—a way to hide God’s Word in their hearts.
The same is true today.
Many songs help us remember the great truths of Scripture. Some even set Bible verses to music, making them easier to memorize. Others beautifully tell the story of God’s redemption in a way that stays with us long after the song ends.
One of the songs that immediately comes to my mind is *Sunday’s Coming* by Phil Wickham. It beautifully walks through the story of Jesus’ ministry, His sacrificial death on the cross, His glorious resurrection, and the promise that He is coming again. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded that the darkest day in history wasn’t the end of the story. Resurrection morning was coming.
I’ll share a link to the song in the comments so you can listen for yourself.
What an incredible story.
And the best part is this:
It’s true.
Jesus willingly died for you and for me. He conquered sin and death by rising from the grave, and today He reigns as King. One day He will return just as He promised.
Until that day, He has given each of us a purpose.
Do you know yours?
God desires more than occasional admiration or casual curiosity. He desires a relationship with you through His Son. And He invites every believer to join Him in His mission of making His name known and proclaiming the good news of salvation to the world.
May the songs we sing do more than stir our emotions.
May they continually remind us of the truth that changes everything.
