When Nothing Seems to Get Better
51 Views

“There’s a time when reality hits and you realize nothing is going to get better.”

My husband and I were riding around in the UTV and we had stopped for a moment to talk. I noticed his glasses were smudged and offered to clean them. Once he took them off, he looked around and remarked that when he was younger, if you hurt something, you knew it would get better. But at a certain age, when things start to go, there is no improvement. Aging sure isn’t for the weak, is it? It seems every day brings about new aches and pains and limitations. “It’s just hard to imagine that my eyesight will never improve,” he said as he put his glasses back on. “Sure they will. In heaven, all things will be better.” He smiled at me.

“We have to keep our eyes focused on the eternal, not the temporary, my love.” That’s not just a thought for dealing with our aging bodies. It’s what we’re instructed to do as a follower of Christ. Colossians 3:1-4 “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” In chapter 2, Paul had refuted the false doctrine that by denying the flesh, one could earn salvation. The truth is clear throughout Scripture: salvation is by Gods grace alone. Only by faith in Jesus Christ can we receive the gift of salvation. In this chapter, Paul calls us to our response to that salvation. Because we have been saved (raised with Christ), we have the power over our flesh. To live as if it were dead, meaning, we should live with little desire of worldly pleasures. If our thoughts and eyes are focused on living for Christ, and not our flesh, we have a better perspective. We see as the Lord would see things. Certain pleasures that once appealed to us no longer do. Material items that might have once been our focus aren’t as important when we consider eternity. Often, we can get wrapped up in achievements, success, and “making it”. We want the “American dream”. But what is it really worth? This flesh, this world, it will all pass away, but there’s one thing that remains – Jesus.

The Word of God is never failing and never ending. He is eternal. And He offers us eternity with Him in heaven. Where there is no more pain. There are no more tears, fears, or death. And our eyes will see the glory of the Lord! Set your affection on things above.
