What Happens Beneath the Surface
52 Views

In elementary school, we learned the life cycle of a plant in science class. We were each given a small, clear cup, soil, seeds, and water. We filled the cup with soil, buried the seed, and watered it. We took all of our little cups and placed them by the window so they could receive sunlight.

We couldn’t see what was happening. To us, it looked like some wet dirt. But there was more going on than we realized.

Our teacher showed us pictures and diagrams of what was taking place beneath the soil. She explained that the seed we planted had to die so that the plant would grow. With nutrients from the soil, proper watering, and sunlight, the plant would grow, and the green stem would push through the soil.

Sure enough, within a week, we all had tiny sprouts of new life. And we were all excited!

Buried with Him

Colossians 2:12

“Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”

What a beautiful picture of our new life in Christ!

In our sin, we were once dead. But because of the power of God, through our faith in Him, He forgave us of those sins. Like that seed that had to die, so did we. Our salvation in Christ brought forth new life in us—the old nature was dead and buried, and a new life began.

But you can’t see what’s happening beneath the surface of someone’s heart. So, to publicly profess our salvation and our decision to follow Jesus, we are baptized—buried with Him in baptism and raised to new life in Him!

And as that plant pushes through the dirt, the green leaves form, and the flowers bloom, so do we in our new life with Christ.

You aren’t a seed anymore. You’re a new plant, establishing roots, growing deep in your faith, and blooming because of the Lord’s work in you!

Walk in the newness of life! We have been set free from the power of sin! Christ’s death nailed our sins to the cross, and His resurrection publicly shamed the evil that once had power over us. We have been forgiven! Live in Christ!

So what does it look like to live in Christ? How do you do that?
