Thin Ice Faith
56 Views

Luther burst through the door with all the excitement and anticipation of a child.

“Get your skates!” he yelled as he ran through the front door.

It was the first snow of the season, and he was ready to hit the ice. His friend and skating buddy, Hayden, lit up like a Christmas tree.

“Is it frozen solid?!”

“Yes! I’ll meet you out there!”

Luther headed out the door to hit the ice while Hayden went to grab his skates.

And within moments, Luther was back in the cabin, drenched from head to toe.

“Doesn’t look like we’ll be skating.”

I love that old show, Coach. Luther and Hayden were always a mess and always getting into trouble. This time was no different. The pond wasn’t frozen solid. What had looked and seemed like a firm foundation cracked instantly when Luther stepped out on it.

He hadn’t taken the time to test the ice before he barreled out across the pond, and he paid the price.

I could replace Luther’s name with my own. Not when it comes to ice skating, but when it comes to what my faith was built on. Until I learned from God’s Word what the truth really is, I was on thin ice.

Look at this from Paul’s letter to the Colossians:

“that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.”

Colossians 2:2–5

False teaching had crept into the church. Some were insisting that only the holiest believers could know the secret knowledge of God, while most believers were kept from it. They also insisted that the body was evil and that Christ had only seemed to be human, but wasn’t truly human.

Paul refuted these lies with the truth of Scripture. He knew the church had to have a firm foundation in the truth of the gospel. He wanted the believers to see these false teachings for what they were. If they tried to step out on those lies, it would be like stepping out onto a pond that wasn’t frozen solid.

It would crack. It would break. They would fall.

A foundation built on anything other than the truth of the Scriptures and the gospel of Christ will crumble.

This is why Paul was so passionate about preaching the truth of the gospel. It was about more than acquiring knowledge. It was about what their lives were built on.

And it’s the same for us today.

What is your faith built on? Is it built on the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ from Scripture? Or is it based on things others have told you or things you think, but can’t back up with the Word of God?

Don’t be deceived. Don’t fall for what only looks true. Test it against the Word of God.

I don’t want to trust in anything other than Jesus. He is our firm foundation. We can trust that He will never fail us. We are always safe when we put our faith in Him.
