Six Life-Changing Words on Words
55 Views

It is amazing how destructive our words can be. They can “set a city on fire,” James says. The wrong attitudes and choices that hurt relationships start in our hearts and minds, but are made public by our words, and the flame of strife is ignited.

Proverbs 17 gives us six words about our words—six admonitions to alleviate strife. This might be a good “word” to print out and put on your mirror to rehearse every morning.

1. DON’T SHARE IT

Whoever conceals an offense promotes love, but whoever gossips about it separates friends. (Vs. 9)

2. DON’T DO IT

If anyone returns evil for good, evil will never depart from his house. (Vs. 13)

3. DON’T START IT

To start a conflict is to release a flood; stop the dispute before it breaks out. (Vs. 14)

4. DON’T LOVE IT

One who loves to offend loves strife. (Vs. 19)

5. DON’T LOSE IT

The one who has knowledge restrains his words, and one who keeps a cool head. (Vs. 27)

6. DON’T SAY IT

Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps silent—discerning, when he seals his lips. (Vs. 28)

“Father, fill me with Yourself,

and give me Divine grace and strength

to control my tongue for Your glory.”
