What Happens When You Die?

Why do most people fear death?

Most people would likely say it’s because it’s unknown. It’s not like Disney World, where people come back and give reviews of their experience.

But it also depends on what they believe happens at the moment of death.

For those who don’t believe in God, there are various ideas about what happens. For many, however, they believe death is simply final—that life just ceases to exist and there is nothing more.

Which leads them to believe that this life is all there is.

That we are on a countdown and must accomplish and strive for as much as possible now—or just live it up, because this is the only life we get, and nothing matters more than pleasing ourselves.

I can see why someone who is not a believer would fear death.

But for the believer… death is not the end—it is the beginning.

Christ promises life after death for all people, whether they believe in Him or not. But if we choose to deny His offer of salvation, then our life after death will be in hell. For those who have put their faith in Him, our eternity is in heaven with God.

Faith in Christ changes how we look at this life here on earth.

We realize it is only temporary.
Our salvation is not just a ticket to heaven, but a commitment to follow the Lord with purpose.
Only one thing truly matters—the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We seek opportunities and creative ways to reach people with this message because we know it is true.
Our striving to be “good enough” ceases because we can rest in the finished work of Christ.
Not even death can separate us from the love of God.

A believer in Christ can serve the Lord with boldness and enthusiasm because he or she knows there is no need to fear death.

Philippians 1:20–24

“For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better. I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live.”

Paul knew the power of the gospel. It completely changed him. He was once a Pharisee, persecuting Christians and determined to rid the world of them. But the moment he met Jesus, he knew the truth. He was a sinner before God, and only faith in Jesus could save him. He studied the Word of God and learned how all the Old Testament Scriptures pointed to Jesus as the Messiah, and he committed his life to serving the Lord.

He knew death would come one day—it comes for all people. But he also knew there was life after death. Jesus proved that without a doubt. After being dead and buried for three days, Jesus overcame death and rose from the grave. He ascended to heaven to be beside the Father. And all who come to Him in faith and repentance will also overcome death. We will spend eternity in heaven.

My question to you today is this: Are you afraid of death?

Why?

Is it because you don’t know where you will spend eternity? Right now, you can know without a doubt. If you believe you are a sinner in need of a Savior, there is only One who can save you. We must believe in our hearts that Jesus is the Son of God and that His death on the cross paid for our sins. Scripture says that if we believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, we will be saved.

Have you done that?

We do not know when this life will end. But we do know that death comes to all. The good news is this: we do not have to fear death. We can be sure of our eternal home today.
