The Shield That Never Breaks
68 Views

Every great superhero has a great superpower or weapon.

But one of the greatest weapons ever forged belonged to Captain America.

His shield.

Made by American metallurgist Dr. MacLain from Vibranium, a virtually indestructible metal alloy, this shield could withstand almost anything.

It protected Captain America against bullets, arrows, and anything his enemies could fire at him.

Well, almost anything.

See, this was “virtually” indestructible. It was man-made, and there was still the possibility that it could be broken. And it was.

While superhero stories are fun to read and watch, we should think about our own battles with the enemy. Our battle against supernatural forces is not some fictional story.

It’s a reality.

Our enemy, Satan, will throw everything he has at us to destroy us. But God…

Don’t you love that part?

But God has given us a piece of our armor that, unlike Captain America’s shield, is unbreakable.

Ephesians 6:16
“In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.”

The shield of faith.

This is what stops the flaming arrows the enemy launches through reminders of our past mistakes and sinful choices. That’s all the enemy has. He wants to fire at us with doubt, fear, worry, and distrust. But against our shield of faith, those attacks are useless.

Because the faith we stand on is the power of Christ.

Hebrews 11 is referred to as the Hall of Faith chapter. Its verses are lined with the patriarchs who, by faith, were counted righteous. It begins by defining faith: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Confidence and assurance.

We can know without a doubt that, even though we cannot see Him, we know that Jesus has the power to save us, to redeem us. Our faith is in Him.

Our faith is not man-made. Hebrews 12:2 tells us where our faith comes from: “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” We don’t just believe, but we have all confidence and assurance in His power to completely save and change us.

When the enemy unleashes his attacks against us, and the fiery arrows of doubt and past mistakes threaten us, we can raise our shield of faith and know that it is indestructible.

Because it was forged through the blood of Christ.

Who are you putting your faith in? Is your shield grounded in faith in Christ? Or are you trusting your own works to save you?

Jesus alone. Not Jesus plus something else. He alone is the One who saves us.
