Better is One Thing

Books and games, movies and plays have been built on the premise of someone being granted one wish. It’s a fanciful desire, but it has some merit. For what we value, we pursue. But the critical decision is this: what do you desire above all else?

TO DWELL

This was not hard for the greatest human king who has ever lived. Here is David’s response.

One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple. (Psalm 27:4)

David not only longed for this, He prayed about it and pursued it with all his heart. He asked God to let him dwell (sit down, remain, abide) in one place: God’s presence. He knew that in God’s presence was “fullness of joy” and “pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11). He understood that to have God’s presence was to have everything for everything flows from Him.

The smart Aladdin, in the fictional tale, would have made his final wish for a million more wishes. But in reality, we need not do so. For those who have Christ have everything. And those who draw near and abide in intimacy with Him have full access.

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom. (Luke 12:32)

So, what do you seek? What do you pray for? As C.S. Lewis said, if we gain Christ, we have “everything else thrown in.”
