When we were kids, we would put old pillowcases on our heads and chase each other through the house. Listen, we had to entertain ourselves. We didn’t have video games, there weren’t computers or iPhones. We grew up in the late 1900s. We had pillowcases.
Back to my story.
These old pillowcases were thin. We could see light, shadows, and the outline of objects as we navigated our way through the house.
Most of the time, anyway.
I was running with the pillowcase on my head and, of course, my head smacked right into something. Hard. I pulled the covering off my head and there it was, clear as day—the table. What was once hidden from sight by the veil was now clear.
We grabbed some ice and put it on, hoping the swelling would go down and there wouldn’t be much bruising. Because—wouldn’t you know it?—tomorrow was picture day at school.
I walked into the room, sat on that stool, and smiled from ear to ear, with a nice little shiner on my left eye.
2 Corinthians 3:16–18
“16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.”
One day you were walking in darkness. And then you met Jesus and the light came on. Things started to make sense. You could see more clearly the truth of Scripture. They weren’t just stories anymore. They were real events, with lessons to learn, truths that began to change your life.
What was once hidden from sight by the veil was made clear.
You were once blind, but now you see.
What incredible freedom! Freedom that can come only by the Holy Spirit through belief in Jesus Christ!
The evidence of a life changed by Jesus will shine. We will have a desire to share about what Christ has done for us and in us. We will want to learn more and, as we do, we will want to share more. We’ll grow in our faith, learning to trust in Jesus and His promises. The fruit of the Holy Spirit within us will grow—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. We will have a desire to obey the Lord out of gratitude, commitment, and respect. Believers will be fruitful, sharing the Gospel and making disciples.
Now that the veil is gone and we can see the truth clearly, we want everyone to know who Jesus is.
We not only see the truth of who Jesus is, we see the truth of who we are. Now, we know and understand that we are sinners. All of us. And our sin has earned us death. And that debt must be paid. Jesus went to the cross to pay for that debt for us. And by putting our faith and trust in Him, He redeems us. We are His. No longer our own. We have been freed from the prison of sin. We are free in Christ.
Will you share that with someone today? Will you encourage them with this truth? Will you be obedient to the Lord and tell them about Jesus?
