How Can I Help?
I’ve found myself asking this question often lately. Many friends, family members, and co-workers are dealing with overwhelming situations and issues. I’m a “fixer,” so immediately when someone tells me of a problem, I start running through solutions in my mind. But, more times than not, there just isn’t a solution—not one I can bring about, anyway. What they are dealing with requires more than what my feeble hands and lacking words can mend.
But there’s one thing I can do that I know will help…
“And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.” -2 Corinthians 1:11
Prayer is our communication with the Lord. It’s a time of sharing what’s on our hearts and minds and listening and waiting for the Spirit’s response.
“1 O Lord, hear me as I pray; pay attention to my groaning.
2 Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for I pray to no one but you.
3 Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.” -Psalm 5:1-3
Paul urged his fellow believers in Corinth to keep praying for him and his companions as they served the Lord. Prayer is important!
He encouraged Timothy to do the same.
“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.
2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.
3 This is good and pleases God our Savior,
4 who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.” -1 Timothy 2:1–4
We call out to the Lord and wait upon Him—but how will He respond?
Oftentimes, it comes through an overwhelming sense of peace.
“6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 4:6–7
That peace overcomes our fears and anxiety.
“4 I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain.
5 I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me.
6 I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side.” -Psalm 3:4–6
If you’re thinking, “The Lord stopped answering my prayers a long time ago. He doesn’t even hear them,” you’re wrong. He is always attentive to His children. He will always be ready to listen when you pray.
“You can be sure of this:
The Lord set apart the godly for himself.
The Lord will answer when I call to him.” -Psalm 4:3
He just may not answer the way we want Him to.
Sometimes, His answer is no. Or not yet. It comes with waiting. Or sometimes the answer to our prayer doesn’t look like what we thought it should, so we think God doesn’t care or isn’t listening.
But the Lord is always near.
And when we offer to pray for someone else, when we go before the Lord on their behalf, Paul gives us an example of how to pray for them.
“9 So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.
10 Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.
11 We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy,
12 always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light.
13 For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son,
14 who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.” -Colossians 1:9–14
Will you join me in prayer today?
Father, You are the Lord God Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth. You formed this beautiful world and all that is within it. You breathed life into all things. You set the world into motion; You care about every single detail of our lives—the big things and the small things. We praise You and thank You for who You are: Your goodness, authority, power, and righteousness! You are a good God and Father. We know we can call out to You, and You hear us. We trust in You with our prayers, knowing that You know what’s best, that all things are done according to Your will and to further Your kingdom.
Our hearts are heavy. They are burdened with pain, loss, worry, fear, and pride. Forgive us, Lord. Hear our cries today as we confess to You all that’s on our hearts—for ourselves and for others. Bring healing to the hurting. Bring peace to the fearful, worrisome, and grieving heart. Bring salvation to the lost. Bring understanding and wisdom so that we might see how You are using all things for Your kingdom. Help us to know You more—to grow closer to You, to trust in You, to follow You.
Thank You for leading us and loving us, God! We praise You today! And it’s in Your Son Jesus Christ’s name that we have the privilege and ability to pray, amen.
What are you praying about today?
Can we pray for you and with you? Let me know in the comments.
