Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: God’s Design in Every Detail of Your Body
238 Views

Did you know that if it were possible to uncoil the DNA in a single cell it would stretch about 6 feet long? With roughly 37 trillion cells in a human body, all the DNA lined up end-to-end would span nearly 67 billion miles—enough to wrap around the solar system multiple times. DNA is like a blueprint for life, packed with information that tells cells how to grow, function, and make a person unique. Did you also know that it is impossible to have a blueprint without a designer? In Psalm 119:73, the psalmist declares, “Thy hands have made me and fashioned me.” Every detail of our being declares the awe-inspiring craftsmanship of a Creator who designed mankind with purpose and for His glory.

The eye is a testimony of God’s design. If the human eye were a digital camera, it would have 576 megapixels of resolution, far surpassing even the best smartphone cameras. The iris has 256 distinct features, which is six times more than a fingerprint’s 40. This makes the iris ideal for biometric security. Despite having only three types of color-detecting cone cells that respond to red, green, and blue, the eye can distinguish up to 10 million different colors. It processes around 10 million bits of visual data per second.

The human ear is an extraordinary organ. The three smallest bones in the body are found in the middle ear. No bigger than a penny, they vibrate to amplify sound waves up to 20 times before passing them to the inner ear. Your ears never stop working, even while you are sleeping. The brain simply filters out the noise to let you rest. They are unique. The shape, size, and ridges make each person’s outer-ear print a potential forensic tool, with odds of a match lower than 1 in a million. God’s Word says, “The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them,” Proverbs 20:12.

Your nose is more than a facial feature. Some scientists say that it can distinguish up to 1 trillion different smells. Up to 80% of what we perceive as “taste” comes from smell. This is why when you have a cold everything tastes bland. No two noses are identical. And while it reaches its basic shape between the age of 10-19, the nose keeps slightly enlarging due to cartilage growth and gravity. Some even say that the nose can act as a lie detector. When a person tells a lie, blood rushes to the nose, slightly raising its temperature. This is known as the “Pinocchio effect.”

God’s Word frequently emphasizes the significance of our mouth, tongue, and lips. The Bible references the mouth over 400 times, highlighting its role in communication and expression. Similarly, the tongue and lips each appear more than 100 times. The term “words” is mentioned over 500 times, emphasizing the power and impact of spoken language. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue,” Proverbs 18:21.

In addition to speaking, the mouth was designed for chewing and tasting. Like fingerprints, your tongue print’s shape, texture, and surface patterns are entirely unique. It is composed of eight interwoven muscles and can have up to 10,000 taste buds. Each taste bud contains 50–150 receptor cells that detect five basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (savory).

God also designed your mouth for expression. It just takes 17 facial muscles to smile, versus 43 to frown. This means happiness is an easier choice. Smiling is also a health booster. It releases antibodies and endorphins, aligning with the Word of God, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine,” Proverbs 17:22. Have you considered how your smile is part of the masterpiece God fashioned for His glory?

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well,” Psalm 139:14. The psalmist cannot even contemplate the work that God has done in creation without breaking into thanksgiving. We are fearfully made—made in reverence or awe. We are wonderfully made—selected or distinguished. I love Young’s Literal Translation of this verse. It reads: I confess Thee, because that with wonders I have been distinguished. Wonderful are Thy works, And my soul is knowing it well. Albert Barnes said of this verse: “I am distinguished by fearful things – things in my creation that are suited to inspire awe, which tend to exalt my ideas of God, and fill my soul with reverent and devoted feelings” Every man, woman, and child ever born carries in his or her body reasons enough for worship and reverent gratitude. When was the last time you looked in a mirror with gratitude?

Speaking of Jesus, Paul writes, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible…all things were created by him, and for him,” Colossians 1:15-16. As the pinnacle of His creation, may we stand in awe of our fearfully and wonderfully made selves and live as vibrant reflections of our Creator’s glory, knowing that every unique feature, every smile, and every single DNA molecule was fashioned by Him and for Him.
