Life is a tapestry of constant change—unavoidable and ever-present. My heart feels the weight of the many changes that life has thrown at me this year. Perhaps you can relate. Living means balancing letting go of what once was and embracing the new. Some changes have been beautiful, others deeply challenging. A move, a career shift, the loss of a loved one, a new school, a change in health, financial transitions, becoming parents, or stepping into the empty-nest season—each of these are major moments that can feel overwhelming and even frightening. Though change can be hard, it is a tool God uses to shape us for good.
Here are some blessings that a change in life can bring.
Change grows us spiritually and personally.
Without change, there is no growth. Seasons of change are essential to our development. It is part of our sanctification. When change arrives as trials or hardships, we face a choice: grow bitter or become better. When it comes through accomplishment or success, we can choose to become prideful or stay humble. We have the choice of how change will shape our lives. What area of your life needs growth? I know that Jesus is constantly growing me in my faith and knowledge of Him (2 Peter 3:18). The process may be challenging, but the rewards of growth are worth it.
Change keeps life interesting.
Normal is comfortable, but it’s also boring! Change keeps us alert and engaged. We can use the interesting aspect of a life change to minister to others who are walking down a similar path. One mistake we often make when going through a change is to stay self-focused. God uses the circumstances in our life to not only shape us, but to impact those around us. Sharing our story and ministering to others not only adds purpose and keeps life interesting, but it acknowledges God and gives Him glory for what He is doing in our lives.
Change is better than living with regret.
Change can be daunting, but it’s vital for a fulfilling life. We often hesitate to make necessary changes due to fear. That’s understandable. No doubt Abraham faced fear when following God to an unknown land. I am sure the apostles feared the unknown after leaving everything behind to follow Christ. But imagine what blessings they would have missed had they been unwilling to let Christ change their lives. We can face the pain of change or the pain of regret. The rich young ruler, unwilling to alter his lifestyle, walked away from Jesus sorrowful (Matthew 19:22). I have often wondered if he felt the lasting pain of regret. Oswald Chambers wisely said, “Leave the broken, irreversible past in God’s hands, and step out into the invincible future with Him.” To follow his advice, we must be willing to change.
Change is going to happen anyway, so embrace it.
Change will happen, so why fight it? Embracing change allows us to move forward and focus on the future. You will never be productive by looking back and holding on to the past. Speaking of the cost of discipleship, Jesus said, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God,” Luke 9:62. By accepting what life brings and keeping our eyes fixed on Christ, we position ourselves to grow. Embrace change and let it work for your good. As the saying goes, when the winds of change blow, build a windmill, not a wall.
Change makes us dependent on the One who never changes.
When life feels like a whirlwind of change, I’m reminded to anchor myself to the Rock—the unshakable foundation that never wavers. “For I am the LORD, I change not.” Malachi 3:6. He is the one steady presence in my life. His Word is truth. His ways are right. His mercy endures forever. He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Leaning on Him through change is always a blessing.
