What’s Your Greatest Weakness?

What is your greatest weakness?

This last week, I spent time with my nephew who just graduated high school. He’s exploring career options, working on his resume and applying for jobs. I gave him a list of questions to answer and told him we would go over the answers and tell why we should respond that way or if we should respond differently.

We got to the question, “What is your greatest weakness?” One reason employers ask this is because it’s important to see that an applicant can recognize their struggles, challenges and weak spots.

But it doesn’t stop there.

As we came to this question, I asked, “Okay, so how are you working to improve this weakness?” At first, he just stared at me in bewilderment. “You didn’t tell me to write that part. It’s a weakness. Why should I explain how I’m working on it?”

An employer also wants to know, can the applicant demonstrate how they are improving or working on this area?

It’s one thing to admit a weakness, but allowing it to continue without improvement can cause a person to crumble.

As much as we may not like to hear this, in order to be successful, we have to have purpose and self-discipline.

1 Corinthians 9:23-27
“23 I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings. 24 Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! 25 All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26 So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. 27 I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.”

Paul shared with the believers in Corinth about living the Christian life and fulfilling our purpose of sharing the gospel and making disciples. He used the example of an athlete training for a race. They are there to win. To do so, they need to know their purpose and be self-disciplined. They couldn’t expect to win if they ate whatever they wanted, just showed up a time or two during the week for a run, or never worked on their weak areas.

So, as followers of Christ, how can we expect to win people to the Lord if we too aren’t training for the race?

We all struggle with something that keeps us from serving the Lord as we should. Maybe it’s memorization, or reading our Bibles, or making time in a busy schedule for study time, or maybe it’s lacking self-confidence to share our story. Whatever it is, we need to own it and show how we are working on it.

Don’t let your weakness cause you to crumble. You have a purpose! Confess that weakness to the Lord and allow Him to work through you to make improvements. Christ works within us for His glory, but we have to be willing to surrender to Him and the work He wants to do.

Let me ask again. What is your greatest weakness, and how are you working on that?

Train with purpose, we’ve got a race to win!

Also… the training paid off! He got two interviews, both went great and he was offered both jobs! He’s made a decision and work begins in 2 weeks!
