Only One: Why Jesus Alone Is Worthy of Our Worship
598 Views

Do you ever get a song stuck in your head? I can hear TJ Sheppard’s voice singing the chorus of Only One You. Do you remember that song?

Here’s the chorus:

“There’s only one Eiffel Tower
One finest hour
One New York town, one 5th Avenue
There’s only one Mona Lisa
One Leaning Tower of Pisa
One Paris and there’s only one you.”

Only one.

Something so unique, that there could never be another, no matter how many attempts to duplicate or replicate. There could only be one.

1 Corinthians 8:4-6
“So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that ‘An idol is nothing at all in the world’ and that ‘There is no God but one.’
5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’),
6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.”

In the middle of Paul’s address to the believers at Corinth about eating food sacrificed to idols, he makes sure to remind them of this crucial truth.

There is only one.

Only one God.

None other.

Zilch.

Nada.

Zero.

God alone.

Anything else is a poor substitute, a cheap replica, an imposter, fake…

Idol.

That’s all they are. Anything else, any other that claims to be God, or that people claim or worship and call it a god, it’s false. It’s not real.

Only God the Father is capable of creating this world, being ever-present, all-knowing, and all-powerful. Jesus Christ, His Son, is one with Him and by Him and through Him are all things.

He is God over all things – the sun, the earth, the animals, rain, crops, people – you name it, He is God over all.

Remember in Exodus how God used the plagues against the Egyptian Pharaoh and his people? Each plague targeted a false god, an idol they worshipped. God proved that these things they put their trust in, made sacrifices to and worshipped, had no power. They couldn’t save them.

Only God has the power to do that.

But Paul also states, not everyone has this knowledge.

Around the world, people worship many things. Whether it’s an idol in the shape of a golden image, an idea of being like a god themselves or they worship many “gods,” their worship is in vain.

Why do they worship these things?

Because they don’t know. They’ve been taught or raised that way and misled because their families were raised that way and misled.

Satan has used many tactics to draw people away from the One true and living God throughout history. People are deceived.

They need to know.

And we need to tell them.

In love.

My heart broke when I stood at a market in Egypt and heard the call for prayer. The street was full of people buying and selling goods and they all made their way to the mosque. Men, women and children grabbed their mats and began bowing towards this building, repeating the prayer that was being said over the speakers throughout the city.

They don’t know.

These people need to know the love of Jesus. They need to know that He alone can offer salvation, eternal life and peace that they so long for.

But you don’t have to go as far as Cairo to see that. All around you, people are trusting in false “gods.” Or even themselves to do enough good to make it to heaven.

John 14:6
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

There is only One.

Only one way to Heaven.

Only one Lord.

Only one Gate.

Only one Prince of Peace, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, Creator, Redeemer, Jehovah, Father, Master, and Savior.

He is the Lord God Almighty. The I AM. The Alpha and Omega – the beginning and end.

Worthy is the Lord! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! He alone is worthy to be praised, to receive glory and honor!

His name is Jesus!
