Foundations

It was Christ’s closing illustration in the most important sermon ever preached. As He came to the close of the Sermon on the Mount, He reminded us about foundations and the necessity of building our lives on the rock of Him and His word versus the unstable sand of this world. “When the rains come,” He said, “a house built on sand will fall …and great will be its fall” (Matthew 6:27, paraphrase).

Sand is everywhere. You don’t have to walk two feet or be awake but a few minutes to hear the subtle, shifting, deceitful lies of the world, the flesh, and the devil. The Prince of this world is subtle and parading as an “angel of light” to deceive even the followers of Christ. He aims his arrow at those whose foundation is unsettled to take them out. King David felt it.

For, behold, the wicked bend the bow,

They make ready their arrow upon the string

To shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.

If the foundations are destroyed,

What can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:2-3)

YOUR FOUNDATIONS ARE VITAL

So where should we plant our lives? What should we hold to and what should hold us? Only Christ and His pure, unadulterated, completely accurate Word is worthy. We must listen to Him.

I should constantly evaluate what is around me. Does what I’m hearing pass the test of Biblical accuracy? And also, those I’m hearing it from—do they pass the test of godliness? Of spiritual holiness? Are they men and women I can trust? Are they humble and kind, but strong and courageous? Do they defer to God and His whole counsel? Do they stand when all else is failing? No one is perfect in this life, but do they carry the marks of spiritual maturity?

Men fail us at times, but do those whose counsel I follow bear the marks of a godly leader, outlined in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1? Are they above reproach? And most importantly, do they carry the undeniable fragrance of the presence of Christ? Is God in them, and do they follow Him? Do they hunger to meet with Him every day through His Word and prayer?

Tozer said, “Listen to no man who does not listen to Christ.” That’s the foundational question: Are those I follow those who follow Christ … humbly, faithfully, courageously? Am I rising early to learn of Him first and testing all else against the all-encompassing truth of the only One who was and is and is to come?
