We stared at the pan, waiting for something to happen. But the yellow, runny eggs weren’t looking the way we thought they should.
“When are they supposed to scramble?” I asked.
🤦🏼♀️
It was our first time really cooking. We didn’t know what we were doing – that was obvious. But we knew we wanted scrambled eggs. We had already stirred them in the bowl and poured into the pan, but nothing was happening. We had imagined they would just fluff up on their own.
As my friend Donny Parrish puts it, “you don’t know what you don’t know.”
Acts 8:14-24
“When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria.
15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money
19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!
21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.
22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.
23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”
24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
Simon- remember him? He’s the sorcerer we were introduced to yesterday. He heard the message preached by Philip and then saw the miracles at his hand and in verse 13 it says that he believed.
And yet today, Peter is rebuking him for thinking he can buy the power of the Holy Spirit.
The lost (those that are not saved) only know what they know. Things that are spiritual are foreign to them. So, how can they know?
All new believers must be taught the truth. Otherwise, they’re going to assume things or listen to every outlandish tale and idea that comes their way. They need to learn what God’s word says and what it looks like to follow Jesus.
This is discipleship. Someone coming alongside you and saying, let me tell you about Jesus. Let me show you who He is, what He’s done, and how you can follow Him. Let me teach you about why Bible study and prayer are important in our relationship with God. Let me show you why the church is so special and how you fit into God’s plan to grow His kingdom. Someone being there to answer questions along the way, helping you learn and grow.
If someone had been there to teach me about making scrambled eggs, that process and meal, would have gone a whole lot better. Simon needed someone there to teach him the ways of God as well. Just as you and I need someone to walk with us and point us to Jesus and how to follow Him.
Can I do that for you? Can I show you what it means to have a relationship with Christ and how to choose to follow Him?
