Is It Worth It?

Recently, we were counting the cost of various things, one of which was putting in a garden. There would be a lot of work involved and money spent to get beds and fences built, seeds started and growing. Would it be worth it?

For some of you, it’s a no brainer. But to which answer?

“Yes! It’s worth it! These are organic vegetables, free from chemicals and pesticides, homegrown, better for you… it’s worth it!”

“Nope. I’ve put the pen to paper. You will never come out ahead growing your own vegetables verses buying them in the store or the local farmer’s market. Not with the amount of work you have to put in as well.”

Counting the cost. It’s what we do before a big decision. There will always be some that believe it’s worth it and others that feel according to what they’ve seen, it’s just not.

How about following Jesus? Is it worth it? When life is easy, sure, but what about when persecution comes?

Wait a minute… did you say persecution? I thought becoming a Christian would make things better, life would be blessed and your problems solved??

Ask any follower of Christ about that…

John 15:18-25

“If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.”

Jesus once again is speaking to His disciples about what it means to follow Him. He’s about to endure the greatest suffering known to man and He reassures His followers that they too will suffer.

Just like the disciples then, we have to choose to follow Christ every day. There WILL be persecution towards us because of our faith. There WILL be hatred and evil against us because we claim Jesus as our Lord.

Is it worth it?

Is HE worth it?

He was beaten, bones exposed, to the point of near death, carried His cross, was nailed to it through His hands and feet, was crucified on the cross, taking all of my sins and yours with Him, separated from the Father and died a horrible death.

He did that because He loves us.

Not the good us. The clean us. The righteous us.

But the dirty, sinful us. The “us” that cheered from the crowd, “CRUCIFY HIM”!!

He chose to die for us.

Because He knew the cost and decided it was worth it.

We were worth it.

So, I ask you again, is He worth it?

I choose to follow Jesus. Will you?

He is worthy!
