Gravity.

“The force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.”

Can I see this force? No. But believe me, as we get older, we realize just how real it is.

Gravity exists.

So, you can believe it or not. It doesn’t change that it’s real. But stand on top of a tall building with a high wind and tell me you’re not a believer. There would be consequences for your unbelief if you decided to jump.

John 8:24-30
“I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.”

Jesus is still in the treasury of the temple teaching. Many Jews, including Pharisees and the scribes, were listening. Jesus was clear in His message to them.

“I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”

Who is “he”?

The Messiah. The Christ. The Son of God. Emanuel. God robed in flesh. The Savior.

The last verse says that many believed in him. But it doesn’t say all. There were still some that didn’t believe.

Just because they didn’t believe He was the Son of God didn’t make it any less true.

But there would be consequences for their unbelief. And those would be the ones to die in their sins.

This message isn’t just to the Jews of that day.

It’s for us.

What do you believe about Jesus? Is it based on His Word? Your belief or lack of belief doesn’t make Him any less real.

Know this – there will be consequences for our unbelief. “if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”

We will all die. Look throughout the pages of history, your family tree, or a cemetery, and see. Death comes to all people. But what we believe about Jesus determines what happens at death.

Death is what we have earned from our sins. But Jesus offers the payment for our sins. He came to this earth, died on the cross, was buried, and rose from the grave. He paid for our sins in full with His life, a perfect sacrifice. But to receive that payment, we must believe in Him.

There is no greater freedom, relief, peace, or victory than when you surrender to Jesus.

Exhausted from the weight of it all, I dropped to my knees. With my face to the ground and my hands stretched out on the floor, I cried out, “Jesus, I need you!”

And in complete surrender, I let go of my grip on my will and my life, recognizing the truth, the reality of who belongs on the throne – Jesus.

Believe.
