Into the Light: Unveiling Truth in the Darkness
361 Views

Cold, sharp eyes stared back at me with a warning look. At first, I was frightened. But then, as quickly as I had seen it, it dashed off through the woods.

I walk out onto the back porch at night to let the dogs out for the last time before bed. Occasionally, you can hear rustling in the leaves through the woods. Apprehensively, I shine the flashlight towards the edge of the woods; I’m not so eager to actually see what’s there.

What thought it was hidden in darkness is now revealed in the light.

Cold, sharp eyes stared back at me with a warning look. At first, I was frightened. But then, as quickly as I had seen it, it dashed off through the woods.

John 3:19-21
“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”

In the previous verses, we learned that those who believe in Jesus are saved from condemnation. But those who reject Christ and choose not to believe in Him as the Son of God are condemned already.

This passage shows us the truth about that condemnation.

Why is it that certain movies are late in the evening? Or are certain x-rated establishments open only at night? Why are things referred to as “the closet”? Or, let’s be honest. If someone shone a light on us in the dark, what would they see?

Darkness is the playground of evil. It believes their sinful deeds are hidden and secret. But when the lights come on, the evil is revealed for what it truly is. Evil is exposed.

Read it in the NIV.

“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.
20 Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.
21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”

Jesus is the light.

Many reject him because they enjoy their lifestyle. Their lustful desires are pleasing to their flesh. They don’t want to give it up. They prefer evil over good.

But, as the Holy Spirit begins to work in our lives, calling us to Jesus, the spotlight is on us. All that we believed was once hidden in darkness is now revealed, and we see our sins for the evil that they are.

And it brings us to our knees in repentance.

Or it should.

See, God is Holy. When His light shines upon our lives, and our sins become clear, shame fills us. But just as God did for Adam and Eve when they sinned, He provides a way for forgiveness.

Jesus.

Without Him, we have no hope. He is our Redeemer. He is our beacon of light, providing the rescue we desperately seek.

Jesus is our light.

As we study His Word, the truth is revealed to us. We read and understand that something happening in our lives right now is due to sin. And we know that Jesus will forgive if we repent. This means to literally turn from our sin and run towards God.

Nothing is hidden from the Lord. Walk in His truth. Run to the light.
