This ring. It’s kind of a funny story really. Shaun and I had talked about marriage for awhile, but he hadn’t proposed yet. One reason being, he didn’t have a ring.
One of our favorite lunch spots was Sam’s. Yes, you read that right. Sam’s Club.
Listen, if you know anything about me, it’s that I like a good deal. You could get a hotdog combo (big hotdog with a large drink) for $1.80! That’s a steal for lunch!
So, while we were in there for lunch, we decided to look at the jewelry, just to see what they had. I looked at several things, commenting here and there and then, I saw it.
I looked at the price.
Perfect.
I pointed out this ring and said, “that’s the one I want.”
He laughed a little thinking I was joking because it really wasn’t a lot of money. But he could see I was serious.
This ring is just a ring. It’s pretty, but to anyone else, it really wouldn’t be that valuable.
But to me, it’s priceless. Not because of the jewels in it. Not because of the setting. Not because of where I got it.
But because of who gave it to me.
It’s only worthy because of the one who bought it for me and gave it to me as a beautiful gift, a symbol of his love for me.
Luke 21:34-36
“And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”
Worthy.
How can we be accounted as worthy to escape these things? How can we be able to be worthy enough to stand before the righteous Judge?
Me? I’m just a person. On the outside I might look okay, but on the inside, I’m a sinner. Nothing about me is worthy when I’m left on my own.
But because of one thing, I’m considered priceless. I will be able to stand before the righteous Judge. I will be counted as worthy. Not because of me, but because of the One who gave it all for me.
I am only worthy because of the One who bought my life, who paid the debt I owed, who gave salvation to me as a beautiful gift, a symbol of His love for me.
The only way we can stand before God on that day is if we have accepted the beautiful gift of salvation from Jesus.
We are His bride. He is the bridegroom.
We are not worthy on our own. We need Jesus.
