The Creator of the Sabbath

He tipped his hat and gave a nod, one that cowboys are known for. We smiled and sipped our coffee, returning to our conversation. The waitress seated him at the table next to us. Now, if you’ve ever eaten at Billie Gail’s you know how crowded it can get and some tables are virtually touching one another.

The French toast was halfway devoured and my husband’s sloppy biscuit was almost clean. He spoke to the cowboy and asked if he was one of the craftsmen at Silver Dollar City. The cowboy said yes and the conversation ensued.

He told us about being set up at the harvest festival one year and an older gentleman came through the vendor area and visited his booth. He wasn’t really looking to buy anything but sat on a stool and they talked for 45 minutes to an hour. Not about anything in particular, just talked. The cowboy said that he told him all about the festival and why he had traveled from Kansas, and even gave his opinion on a few things here and there about the park. After the man left, another vendor came over and asked him what he had been talking about with the older gentleman. Puzzled, he said that they really hadn’t been talking about anything, just shooting the breeze, as we say.

He asked why and the woman told him, “well, because that was Mr. Herschend, the founder of Silver Dollar City.

He had been talking with the very one that had created this place, and here he was giving his opinions about how things were being done. He just smiled and laughed at himself.

And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Luke 6:1-5

The Pharisees always have something to say, don’t they? Here they are trying to find guilt in Jesus and His disciples, yet again.

But Jesus not only tells them they aren’t breaking any laws of the sabbath, but that He is the very creator of the sabbath.

Can you imagine what was going through their minds when they realized what Jesus just said?!

How could they possibly think they knew more or had more authority over something than the very one that created it?

But don’t we do the same thing? God is the creator of all things, which gives Him all authority.

It would do us good to remember that.
