Don’t Be Left in the Dark

As we settled into our seats and buckled our seatbelts, I took out the plastic information card in the pocket in front of me. Shaun laughs because I read the procedures every time we get on an airplane.

“I need to know what to do. How will I know if I don’t read the instructions? They made this little card for a reason. If something happens, you’ll be sorry you didn’t read it! You won’t know what’s going on or what to do.”

The flight attendant begins to go over the procedure and I watch carefully. When she talks about the oxygen mask, I look up to where it will come from. When she speaks of the flotation device, I touch the bottom of my seat. As she goes over the emergency exists, I twist around to see each one. As she goes over the information card, I read along with her, again touching each part of my seat as it’s described on the guide.

I want to understand. I want to know what to do. I don’t want to be left in the dark.

“And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.” (Mark 4:21-25)

Jesus had just talked to the disciples about revealing truth to those that wanted to hear it. He could teach a multitude, but only some would truly listen and hear His words.

Here, He gives another example. He says who would light a lamp and put it under a basket or bed? Why would they hide it and not let it be seen? Why wouldn’t they light it and let it show others what’s in the darkness?

That’s the purpose of the light, so of course they wouldn’t light it and hide it, it would be of no use!

Just like the word of Jesus. Even though He may have spoken in parables, it wasn’t to hide the truth. His truth was meant to be revealed to those that truly wanted to hear.

Those that hear the word of God and understand it, they desire to read more, know more, and from it, they grow in knowledge and wisdom. But those that hear the word of God and turn from it, never paying attention, they will not gain anything. They won’t grow. In fact, Jesus warns what little they have heard or learned will fade away as they walk further and further from God.

The Bible is full of truth! It is packed with history and incredible people. Its words direct our steps, helping us make decisions, giving us the words to comfort someone that’s hurting, and convict us of our own sin as we read the words. The more I read, the more I want to know. I grow in knowledge and wisdom. Not so I can brag, but so I can grow closer to God and be ready! When the time comes for me to share the word with a friend, I want to be ready! When God calls me to teach about a subject, I want to be ready! And when that trumpet sounds…

I’ll be ready.

Those that have an ear, let them hear!

Are you ready? If you claim Jesus as your Savior, don’t you want to know Him? Don’t you want to learn how to follow Him? Let’s do that together! His word does not have to be confusing or hidden in the dark. His truth is ready to be revealed to you… are you ready?
