How Quickly We Forget

Finding a movie to watch can be a challenging task in our house. As we search through the movie titles, my husband will click on one and say, “Ooh, this looks good.”

With a sideways glance, I think, “Really? Again?”

“Honey. We’ve seen that.”

With complete surprise he always exclaims, “Really? Are you sure?”

“Yes. Last week. Remember, it has that girl in it that played in…”

“Oh! Yup. Okay, how about this one, it looks pretty good.”

“We’ve seen that one, too.”

While I am the world’s worst at remembering things, there are two areas that I can remember for a lifetime – movies and song lyrics.

But my sweet husband just forgets all about the movie when it’s over. He’s there, he watched it, he saw the same thing I did, but he just quickly forgets about it when the credits roll.

“Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.” (Matthew 19:13-15)

Sound familiar? It should! In Matthew 18:4-6, Jesus taught the disciples about the innocence of children and the importance of that type of faith to the kingdom of God. So how is it that they have forgotten so quickly?

Oh, friends! How often does God pull us from the darkness, revealing His beautiful plan and light to us, and yet we find ourselves back there again? How quickly we forget. We forget His goodness, His mercy, His redemptive work. We allow the things of this world to tempt and pull us back. He has already won the victory over sin and death and yet we forget His promises to us.

Over and over, Jesus reassures us of many things through His word, one of them being that He loves us. Another is that we are called to be set apart from this world for His glory. And yet another is that He alone is worthy to be glorified and praised. So why do we forget these things so quickly?

“Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let Thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, oh take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above”

Let us continuously seek the Lord and His goodness and remember His beautiful and amazing grace that has saved us. And when we wander and forget, let His word draw us back in. Daily walking and talking with the Lord through His written word.
