We’d gone through it 15 times and I really thought I had it down this time. Turn on the machine. Put the strip inside the machine. Clean the finger. Prick the finger. Put the droplet of blood up to the strip and then wait for the number.
The nurse and doctor were patient with me, going over it several times and letting me go through the motions.
At 2:00, we started our diagnostic scenario. The kids were excited and nervous all at the same time. Some didn’t like needles, so they were anxious for the activity and ready for it to be over.
I got to my student, went through my steps in my head and then as soon as I was ready to go, a big E flashed on the monitor screen.
“I need some help over here!” I yelled from across the room. The doctor came over and took the machine, put in a new strip and boom, it worked.
I couldn’t believe it! I mean, I thought I had done everything right. How did it work for her but not me? Honestly, I was afraid I was going to mess something up. What if I poked in the wrong spot? What if I hurt the student? What if I put the strip in wrong? What if…
As the thoughts swirled through my mind, I thought, “Next time I’ll be ready”.
“And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:14-21)
The disciples had tried, but they lacked one thing as they tried to cast out the demon. They wanted to know why they couldn’t do it. And Jesus replied – lack of faith. Maybe they were trusting in their own power and not God’s. Jesus said that through prayer, fasting, and spending time with God, they would be able to do these miracles. Without spending time at the feet of the Lord, they wouldn’t be ready for the job ahead.
Today, we are so much like the disciples. We profess to be Christians, but if our main job is to share the gospel so that others might be saved, we are failing. How many of us actually do that? We encounter lost people every single day, but do we recognize their need? Do we know what to say? Do we know how to lead them to the Lord? Or do we run to someone else for help?
Oh, ye of little faith.
God has given us everything we need in order to do the work He has for us. People are dying and going to Hell because we are too nervous, too scared, too awkward, or too prideful to share the good news of Jesus Christ with them.
Let it not be so.
Through our own prayer and fasting, we commune with God, learning to depend on His power and not ours. He is the one that speaks through us. He works in the hearts of those He calls us to share the gospel with. It’s not us! So, what are we waiting for?
Fall to His feet and trust in Him. This is where true faith is built.
