“Johnny D., the one and only.”
I don’t know how many times I heard that phrase growing up. My dad just thought it was the best way to describe himself. If I were to ask those that knew him to describe him, they would say things like, “who is Johnny? He’s a funny guy, he cares about the kids, he loves sports, and of course the ladies, too.” People from his old days might think of him as the life of the party or a good ol’ boy. He was a friend to all, and a brother to many.
But if you asked me who Johnny was, I would tell you he is my father, the son of Pete and Lorraine Young. Because he is my father, I have a deeper relationship with him. And because of it, I also know who I am – his daughter.
“When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 16:13-17)
Jesus asked his disciples who people said he was. And of course, there were many things that were used to describe him- a great teacher, or even that he is John the Baptist or Elijah or Jeremiah. But when Jesus posed the question to the disciples, Peter spoke up and said, you are the Messiah.
This was important for the disciples to know and to proclaim. If they believed anything else, there message was in vain, and they would perish into Hell.
Today, the question is posed to you – Who is Jesus? Your answer determines your destiny. Is He your father? Do you have a relationship with Him where you know you are His daughter or son? Or do you just know His name and believe that He was a good teacher?
Will you proclaim the truth that He is the Messiah? I will speak boldly and tell you that if you believe anything other than that, it is in vain and your soul is destined for Hell.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36)
“Who do you say that I am?”
