I did my best, but when I looked at the paper, you could hardly read my writing. I was so worried my teacher would know I did my homework on the bus that morning. She would know I had put it off and hurried through it.
I erased part of it and tried again, but when you’re riding the bus on the backroads of Cord, AR, it’s pothole city. I tried again.
As we got closer to school, dread filled me that I wouldn’t get it finished. Why hadn’t I just worked on it the night before? Oh yeah, Elizabeth called. And then, of course, I spent another hour on the phone with Ashley. And then I played basketball for a while, we ate dinner, and watched a few shows. I hadn’t even remembered I had homework until I got on the bus that morning. My memory must have been jarred by the bumps and shakes of the bus barreling down the gravel road.
With only half of my paper completed, we pulled to a stop, and the bus began to unload.
Oh, procrastination!
“And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, How long are ye slack to go to possess the land, which the LORD God of your fathers hath given you?” (Joshua 18: 3)
The children of Israel had traveled the distance from Egypt, back to their homeland to claim the inheritance the Lord had promised them – the land of Canaan. All they had to do was forge ahead and the Lord would help them conquer the land. But the Israelites tarried. They stopped. They put off what needed to be done today until tomorrow.
What if tomorrow doesn’t come?
Are there things you keep putting off that need to be done today?
“Go to now, ye that say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (James 4:13-14)
“Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” (Psalm 27:1)
We don’t know what tomorrow holds, nor do we know there will be a tomorrow.
Has the Lord been calling? You feel it in your heart. You have been convicted of your sins, yet you keep putting it off.
Today. Answer His call today. Tomorrow may be too late.
“Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2)
