Live-Giving Water

The trickle of the water across the rocks has such a soothing sound. The sun glistening off the top of the stream, honeysuckles growing by the banks, and beautiful rocks creating small waterfalls make creeks one of my all-time favorites.

Every summer, we would explore this big creek by my grandmother’s house. Hours would be spent playing in the water. Then we’d slip on our jelly shoes and make the trek back home. Even as I waited for the school bus in the mornings, I would be fascinated by the tiny streams of water flowing through the ditch to a small creek down the road.

As soon as we’d get on the bus, I would find my seat and stare out the window, following the streams wherever we traveled. I loved watching the flowing water and imagining where it would end. And the best part was finding an animal coming to the water for a drink. Here in the hills, it’s a normal occurrence to pass over a creek and see a family of deer standing at the banks, getting a cool drink. Even they are on a quest for water that will sustain them.

In our study in Joshua, we read about the land of Canaan being divided amongst the tribes. In Chapter 15, land has been given to Caleb, but a portion of scripture is dedicated to pointing out that his daughter also received land from him.

“And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife. And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. And it came to pass, as she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou? Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs.” (Joshua 15:16-19)

More than likely, the land was a wedding gift to his daughter. Having been given the southern land, she knew it was dry and had little rain. She was on a quest for water to sustain them. Receiving the springs was a true gift of life for her and her future family and livestock.

In the book of John, we learn of another woman who was on a quest for water to sustain her. As she came to the well, in the heat of the day, a man asked for a drink. She being a Samaritan, and he being a Jew, she was shocked that he would even ask her. As their conversation began, He knew what she really needed, and it was not just the water of the well.

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.” (John 4:10)

“Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:13-14)

Jesus, in this moment, revealed Himself as the Messiah to a woman who was on a quest for water to sustain her. What she received was the life-giving water of God!

Friend, are you thirsty? Are you desperately seeking water that will sustain you? True, life-giving water? The Father is calling and says “come”.
