Give Me This Mountain

Do you have dreams? What is it that you dream of doing? You know I’m a planner and a dreamer. There is nothing more fun to me than organizing a trip or planning out a new venture. My dreams are big and sometimes limitless. When I was in high school, we had to design a project for our school. We decided to do a flower garden at the front entry. But to me, it needed a fountain. They were talking about how we could even make that happen, but in my mind, it was easy.

“Just put the water in there and let it flow!”

I’ll never forget the look Mrs. Franks gave me. She said, “And just how are you going to get the water going without a motor?”

I confidently said, “Well, can’t you just siphon it and, once it starts, it would just keep going?”

My big dreams came with lots of confidence. Even if it wasn’t realistic, I just knew we could do it.

“Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadeshbarnea to spy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart. Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God. And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s forever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God. And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in. Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.” (Joshua 14:7-12)

He was 85 years old and still had the confidence that he could drive out the giants that inhabited the land. “Give me this mountain… if the Lord be with me, I’ll be able to drive them out.”

His faith never wavered. Caleb was one of the original spies, along with Joshua, to go into the land. With his whole heart, he believed the Lord could do anything. His report was truthful to Moses and the Israelites. He said there were giants, but he knew the Lord would defeat them even still.

Now, 45 years later, he still has that same confidence that the Lord will do as He said. He knows the Lord will fulfill His promise.

Give me this mountain.

What holds you back from your dreams? Most of the time, it’s a lack of confidence in ourselves. Perhaps we even doubt that the Lord would or could make it happen. We should be more like the 85-year-old Caleb, facing the giants of Hebron and say, “Give me this mountain! If the Lord is with me, I can do this!”

I’m ready! Are you?
