It Was In The Bible

It’s in the syllabus.

If you are a professor or a student or even just remember those old college days, you’ve heard or given that response a time or two.

Professors spend a great deal of time working to prepare for the college course. Everything from the homework to the test dates to the rules of the class are included on the syllabus. It’s the go-to guide for students to know exactly what to expect and what’s expected of them. And when they don’t follow the rules, they have no excuse. Why? Because it was in the syllabus.

God created something similar when He gave the laws to the Israelites that are detailed in the book of Leviticus. As you read through the chapters, you think, “He’s said this several times already”. Repetition in scripture is like me using all caps in a sentence or exclamation points.

Follow these rules! Seems pretty important right? God gave detailed instructions to the people and made sure they understood them so they could live a holy, peaceful and righteous life. There were warnings of punishments that would come if they didn’t follow the rules.

“And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.” (Leviticus 20:26)

Every semester, as it winds down and final grades are being calculated, a professor hears from the students. “Is there anything I can do to raise my grade? Please tell me and I’ll just do it! Isn’t there something for extra credit? I can’t have a D! That’s not fair, can’t you just give me a few points to make it a C?”

You had all semester. It was in the syllabus.

I can just hear the pleading at the judgment before God. “Isn’t there anything I can do now? Please tell me and I’ll just do it! Isn’t there something I can do that would make up for my mistakes? I can’t go to Hell! That’s not fair, can’t you just forget about my sins and let me into heaven?”

You had all your life. It was in the Bible.

Are we reading? Are we studying? Are we listening? Do we understand the magnitude of our situation? We have been given clear instructions on how to live our lives and what we are to do… but are we doing it?
