I love watching home restoration shows. Taking something old and restoring it to a beautiful place, there’s just something incredible about that.
Fixer Upper is probably one of my favorites. Chip and Joanna Gaines are a funny couple that work together to restore these old homes into new and spectacular places for families. They make all of these neat plans and designs, but there is one thing that has to happen before they can move any further.
The purchase. The price has to be paid before they can do anything towards restoration. It’s a huge step for the family, but they know it has to be done.
Moses has led the people out of Egypt. They have built the tabernacle and have remained at the foot of Mt. Sinai. As Exodus ends, we see the glory of the Lord residing in the tabernacle.
As Leviticus begins, God opens with a statement to Moses that pretty much says, before we can go any further, something has to take place.
“And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock. If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD. And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.” (Leviticus 1:1-4)
A price has to be paid before they could move any further. The sacrifice was required for restoration.
The book of Leviticus details how to live a holy life as a follower of God. It looks different from the rest of the world for a reason. God offers a relationship with him to the people, but sin has created a divide. Before they could move further, they had to make a burnt offering as a sacrifice for their sin.
Even today, a sacrifice has to be made before we are able to approach our Holy God. I’m sure you are thinking, “Um, I thought sacrifices were only required in the Old Testament?”
You’re right. But there’s only one reason why…
Jesus.
Jesus came to be that ultimate sacrifice to atone for our sins, once and for all. But before we can enter into a relationship with God, we must accept Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. He was the spotless sacrificial lamb, giving His life for ours, paying the price for our sins.
Before we move any further, we have to get that done first. No restoration can take place until the purchase has been made and accepted. Will you accept Him today?
