He Equips the Called

I can’t remember if I told you this, but I have a horrible memory. My husband and I can be talking and I’ll say, hold on, you never told me that. And, of course, his response is that he did tell me, 2 days ago. Or we will be making plans and I’ll say, I need to get this thing done, and he will remind me that I already did that.

My mom will tell me about something that happened several years ago and I draw a complete blank. I can’t remember it at all.

It’s like I live in a whole new world some days. I honestly feel like Dory from Finding Nemo sometimes. I have to make notes of everything. I have a gazillion calendars and to-do lists. I keep every text message and email so I can remember what was said. And yes, I’m totally out of storage!

Last week, the feelings of panic were overwhelming because I couldn’t remember something really important. I remembered the conversation, but I couldn’t remember the response. I was so frustrated with myself. I tried so hard, but it wasn’t there.

So why then, how, am I able to remember these little moments and stories throughout life to use as analogies for our devotionals each morning? For several years now, I’ve written a devotional for nearly every morning using a little memory that just seemed to fit. I’m astonished sometimes at the recollection, things I had forgotten are suddenly brought to my attention.

By whom?

Only God.

“And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship; And to devise curious works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, And in the cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of wood, to make any manner of cunning work. And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.” (Exodus 35:30-35)

These men were skilled in a trade, but it was God who gave them the wisdom and knowledge of how to build the tabernacle and the pieces that would be inside. The rest of Exodus is about the building of the tabernacle – the beautiful curtains, the ark of the covenant, the altar, the lampstand, the priestly garments… all of it to the exact specifications the Lord has put into the people’s hearts.

God calls us to extraordinary work even though we are simple and just ordinary people. As it has been said many times, He does not call the equipped, He equips the called. Our job is just to obey.

So today, if you are feeling less than worthy, inadequate for the job, or humbled beyond measure, you are exactly where God wants you. A willing heart for His will and His way.
