Our Talents for His Glory

When I was in the 6th grade, my dad found an old typewriter. It was really, really old. The kind where the keys would fly up and smack the paper with every push of the button. Sometimes they’d get stuck and you’d have to work them back into place. I would type on that thing for hours every day. It started with a few letters to people and then I started writing short stories. One I remember was about a group of 4th grade friends who solved the mystery of the missing class hamster.

I have always had a love for reading and telling stories. Every year, I couldn’t wait to get my report card that would tell what my reading level was. One year, it showed I was at a 6th grade reading level; I was in the 2nd grade.

During my senior year, they offered a college English class, so I jumped at the chance to take it and challenge myself. It was in that class that my love for writing took on a new depth. I wrote a story about this young family, barely getting by. The struggles that ensued, the fights between the parents, even the details of the home they lived in. I described the trailer with tin foil on the windows and running water only some of the time. But in the end, there was a twist when you realized the person telling the story was an unborn child in the womb.

When I got my paper back, the grade was an A and she told me I had a knack for writing and I should keep developing it.

College gave me more opportunities as I became a journalism major. Then the news station as a reporter, anchor and editor. Then working with students on their personal statements as they apply to professional schools. And now with Lifeword as a writer for their blog and for Mission World TV.

I’m not a great writer, but I enjoy it. I’m thankful God chose to use my love for telling a story for His glory.

Exodus 28, God describes the clothing to be worn by the priests that would work in the temple. It wasn’t just an ordinary outfit, it had intricate detail and precious stones and materials for each piece. They were to make a breastplate, ephod, robe, bordered coat, a mitre (turban), and a girdle (sash). But who is they? Who was to make this?

God already had that worked out.

“You shall speak to all the skillful, whom I have filled with a spirit of skill, that they make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him for my priesthood.” (Exodus 28: 3)

The King James Version says “wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom”.

Tailors with a special skill set, gifted by God, used their talents to create the clothing.

Are you? You are talented in something. Maybe it’s singing or writing or building or science or computers… or perhaps it’s working with children, languages, cooking, or simply listening. Whatever you are good at or enjoy, are you using it for God’s glory? Why do you think you were gifted with it in the first place?

Not for you my friend…but for Him!

Today, think about these things and decide how you can use your talents to bring Him glory! Those that have trusted in Christ, have received the Holy Spirit at the moment of Salvation. He has gifted each person with special gifts! And He will bless your work for Him!
