A Seat at the Table

The table.

It’s a place where families gather to share a meal and talk about their day. It’s the spot where kids do their homework, puzzles are put together, and parents burn their fingers with the hot glue gun finishing their kid’s class project at midnight. Serious talks about life happen at the table. Bibles are open and notes taken as an early morning study begins. It’s a place where you feel welcome, invited, and nourished.

God continues His instruction for the building of the tabernacle. Each piece has specific dimensions, materials and purposes.

The table of shewbread.

God gave the dimensions for the table and instructed the people to cover it with gold. They would also put four rings on the top, one on each corner, for the wooden rods to go through to be able to move the table properly. Even the dishes would be made to specification and covered in gold. Laid on top would be the shewbread.

“And you shall set the shewbread on the table before Me always.” (Exodus 25:30)

What was shewbread? It was also called the bread of the Presence.

“And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake. And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the Lord. And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the Lord. Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the Lord continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant. And it shall be Aaron’s and his sons’; and they shall eat it in the holy place: for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the Lord made by fire by a perpetual statute.” (Leviticus 24:5-9)

Twelve loaves representing the twelve tribes of Israel. God invited the priests to enter in the tabernacle to the Holy place each sabbath and eat the bread offering. This table and bread symbolized 3 things:

1. God’s covenant with Israel.
2. His promise to nourish the nation.
3. A way for the priests to show thankfulness to God for His provision.

God invites you to the table too. A place where you feel welcome, invited, included. No longer is it just for the priests, but all can come to the table of God. He provides spiritual nourishment for each of us as we dine with Him, taking in the beautiful depths of His love and truth. We come before His presence with thanksgiving for all the blessings He has given to us, that we do not deserve.
