Created for a Purpose

What is your favorite invention? Microwave? Flashlight? Yeti cup? Sunscreen? Computer? Air conditioner?

There are a gazillion things I love and appreciate because they fulfill a need; each thing was created for a defined purpose. It was made to do something specific.

In Exodus 25, we see the Lord begin to lay out the instructions for building the Tabernacle. He begins with the Ark of the Covenant. When I was younger, the only thing I really knew about this ark was what I learned from Indiana Jones.

So what was the ark of the covenant? It was designed by God and created for a purpose.

1. House the 10 commandments.
One of the first things God mentions about the ark is that it would hold the “testimony which I shall give thee.” (Exodus 25:16,21) God’s word would be hidden within the heart of the ark and protected.

2. Mercy Seat of God
The mercy seat was a place of atonement. The sacrifice for sin would be done and then the priest would sprinkle the innocent blood on the mercy seat to atone for the sins of the people. Their guilt would be forgiven because of the sacrifice made (Exodus 25:17).

3. Presence of God
The instructions included to make two cherubim facing one another and the mercy seat between them (Exodus 25:18-20). This is where God would commune with the people.

“And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.” (Exodus 25:22)

Created for a purpose.

You and I are no different than this masterpiece. We too are created for a purpose from God and for God.

1. House His commandments
Just like the ark, we read His word, we know his laws and commandments, and they are kept within us. We hide His word in our hearts, where no one can take it away.

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119:11)

2. Mercy has been poured out upon us.
The mercy seat was sprinkled with the innocent blood of the sacrifice for the atoning of sin. We have been covered by the blood of Jesus to atone for our sin. God is merciful to forgive us!

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”. (Ephesians 1:7)

3. Presence of God
At the moment of salvation, God sends His Holy Spirit to live within you. This is where God meets with us. Emmanuel, God with us.

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

“If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” (John 14:15-17)

We were created for a purpose- of God and for God. Our purpose is to know Him, to love Him, to serve Him and to glorify Him!

Are we fulfilling our purpose?
