The Most Loving Thing

What would you think of a doctor who found a cure for a deadly disease but didn’t share it with the world? What would you think of a firefighter who neglected his duty when he was needed the most? What would you think of a person who stood by and watched a blind man walk off a cliff? What would you think of a father who let his small children play in a busy street? What would you think of a mother who knowingly let her child drink poison?

I’m pretty sure I know the answer to those questions. But what if they all seemed to have good reasons? What if the doctor was too important or busy to go around sharing this cure with others? What if the firefighter feared getting burned? What if the person watching the fate of a blind man felt it was none of his business? What if the father didn’t want his children mad at him? What if the mother thought the child enjoyed drinking poison?

The above scenarios are ridiculous, and the above excuses are nothing but false justifications. Yet, how often do I give the same reasons for not sharing the Gospel? The gospel is the greatest news a person can hear. Sharing this good news is the most loving thing a person can do. When Nicodemus came to Jesus in the middle of the night seeking answers, this good news was shared with him.

Jesus said,

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved,” John 3:16-17. Beautiful, isn’t it? God loved the world. But let’s not stop there. Born into sin, enemies of God and totally depraved; people are perishing. Mankind is headed toward eternal damnation. But God loved the world, sent His Son, and did a work we could not do. This is good news!
Good news of the gospel makes no sense without bad news first. In fact, it’s foolish until you understand why it’s so good. Would you be thankful if someone broke into your home and violently snatched you from it? No, that would seem foolish, unless your house was on fire. Then you would be very thankful for being saved. John 3:16 is good news. The bad news is that “he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God,“ John 3:18.

No one likes to share bad news. No one enjoys telling people they are facing judgment. No one takes pleasure in pointing out that the wage for their sin is eternal death. But if we love people, we will do just that. If we love people, we won’t be too busy to share the gospel because in it is the hope of eternal life. If we love people, we won’t let our fear keep us from having compassion and making a difference and saving them with fear, “pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh,” Jude 1:22-23. If we love people, we will care enough to get involved and help those who are blind see the danger ahead. If we love people, we will be more concerned with their eternal fate than if they like us or get mad at us. And if we love people, we will show them that sin is killing them, even if they are enjoying it for a season.

May God fill our hearts with His love!
