Draw Closer to God

I’m a kinesthetic learner. Tell me something and I’ll forget it that day. Show me and I’ll remember half of it. But allow me to experience it and I’ll remember it for life.

Like when I learned how to braid hair in Girl Scouts. Or how to sew in Home Ec. How to dribble in peewee basketball. How to fish, how to write, shoot, and edit a video

All of these things I learned not just by hearing and seeing, but by doing. I had to be a part of it. I had to physically be there, to not only witness it, but understand it on a whole new level.

Luke 18:31-34

“Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.”

Jesus met with His closest disciples, the 12 men He had personally called to follow Him. He was sharing with them what was about to happen. They were headed to Jerusalem. This is the place where a chain reaction would start. All of which had been foretold by prophets in the Old Testament.

But as verse 34 tells us, they didn’t understand. They could hear the words Jesus was saying, but it didn’t make sense. They had read the words of scripture He was referring to, but still, they didn’t comprehend what it all meant.

They wouldn’t fully understand His meaning until they experienced it first-hand. They would be there for the betrayal. In fact one of them would be the one to deliver Him to the guards. They would experience Him being mocked, insulted, spit upon, beaten, die, and buried.

And then, they would see the resurrection. They would see Him risen from the dead. They would physically touch His nail-scarred hands. They would experience these verses and then they would know.

And it would change their life forever. They would understand it on a whole new level. They would go unto the ends of the earth to share the story. It would impact them so much that they would die for it.

Would we? Do we really comprehend the love of God and His sacrifice for us?

Those that are unbelievers think the Bible is foolishness. They cannot comprehend the Word, the fact that God exists or that He would be willing to die for us.

And then there are people who believe God is real, that something or someone had to create this world, but they don’t believe He loves them.

Furthermore, there are those that have accepted Jesus as their Savior but the Bible is still a mystery to them. They read a little and give up easily if they don’t understand something. They aren’t willing to dig deep into studying it.

And then there are some that know the story of Jesus because they have been drastically changed by it. They experienced His salvation in an incredible way and have surrendered their life to Him. They study His Word to learn more about Him and how to apply it to their lives.

And many of them have been shown how to do it. Someone has given them an example to follow. They’ve taught them how to study, how to pray, why it’s important, the basic fundamentals of the Christian life. In fact, they understand it on a whole new level and are able to take what they know and teach it or show it to others.

They do this through what we call discipleship.

Just like Jesus did with His disciples.

Where do you feel like you fit in those groups? Maybe there’s even another that I didn’t mention. Wherever you find yourself today, know that there is always an opportunity to draw closer to God. To understand Him more. To see what has happened more clearly and to understand what’s ahead for the future.

Want to know more? Ask someone to disciple you.

Not sure how to disciple someone? Let me show you how.

There’s nothing like it. Seeing the eyes of someone open to understanding and light up when that aha moment happens. Take that step today towards a deeper walk with Christ.
