My best friend Danae and I had the speed clean down. It was truly an art.

I’d spend the night, and the next morning when we got up, we’d always find a note from her mom on the back of a piece of junk mail on the table. She told us exactly when she would be back and what needed to be done before she and Mr. Wherry returned.

That meant we had a certain number of hours to do whatever we wanted and 15 minutes for a speed clean.

And we waited until the absolute last minute to begin.

We always had everything done. Not exactly perfectly, but it was done by the time they got home.

But what if she had come home early?

We certainly wouldn’t have been ready. We probably would have been out running around on the scooter or taking a trip down to Arms Grocery.

And boy, would we have been in trouble.

Why didn’t we just do the things she had asked first? Why not take care of them immediately? Then we could have enjoyed the rest of the day knowing we were ready whenever she got home.

“But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.”
1 Thessalonians 5:1–2

In the previous passage of Scripture, Paul was sharing about the rapture, when the Lord sounds the trumpet and believers will go to heaven.

And the question on everyone’s mind was, “When?”

What would happen if we knew exactly when Jesus would return?

We’d probably try to do everything we wanted to do, and then, when it was almost time, we’d ask the Lord to save us. Just like Danae and I did with the speed cleaning.

And knowing who we are, sinful people, the things we would be doing probably wouldn’t be pleasing to the Lord. Nor would our lives be encouraging others to see that they need salvation.

God’s design and timeline are perfect. He knows us. And He knows exactly what we would be doing.

Waiting until the last minute.

We don’t know when Christ will return. So, when is the best time to call on the Lord to save us?

Now.

Today is the day of salvation.

We must be prepared for His return! Pray to the Lord for salvation and choose to follow Him with your life.
