Our Cadence Is To Be Out Of Step
The Lord will work in the lives of the truly repentant, not those only interested in token religion.   ~~~   So today’s word is out of step with the world; it is like nails on a chalkboard that make modern man cringe, but that is a good thing, because the world is opposed to God. Our cadence is to be out of step. So what exactly is the scandalous message? Remember that 1 Samuel is written to give a historical account of how kings became primary players in the life of the people of Israel. So far we have not made it to when the people ask for a king, but we are getting close. But from this story the original audience would learn that victory and peace does not come from military might or from religious tokenism; victory/triumph comes from God by God. That God all by Himself is able to handle Himself, and the way back to God is through repentance; we are not to be asking God to rush to our sides and assist us in our own personal missions, but rather that we need to be rushing away from our personal missions back to God. That is the scandalous message—seeing, recognizing, confessing, naming, mourning over and owning your sin and repenting/turning away from your sin and following the LORD. The Lord stands ready to restore the repentant life, not religious tokenism/voodoo. The repentant heart is the condition of the Lord’s restoration. To see this in action come on back tomorrow.

Jesus Is Not Your Homeboy
We often want just enough Jesus to be free from sin, but not to change us for the better.   ~~~   The people in the text of 1 Samuel 6 were not so much different than the people of Jesus’ day. Remember when Jesus healed the man that roamed in the tombs of Gerasenes. He sent his demons into a flock of pigs. And the townspeople begged Jesus to depart from them. Why? They were more interested in their possessions than in the power that was just presented to them in Jesus. They wanted Jesus pushed to the margins.   They were unwilling to do any self-assessment, self-evaluation. They did not want to realize the mercy and the holiness that was before them. They just wanted their stuff and go on with life.   Sadly, we see that same sentiment far too often in our churches. Just enough of Jesus to be immunized from the bad, but not enough that makes any identifiable difference. The only problem with that is that is that is not how the gospel works. Plenty of people want Jesus as a friend, a neighbor, a divine shoulder to cry on. But he never offers himself in segmented pieces. Jesus is the LORD of all, and must be received on his terms, not yours or mine.

Who Can Stand Before The Lord?
Jesus is the only perfect priest who can mediate for us before God.   ~~~   “Then the men of Beth-Shemesh said, ‘Who can stand before the Lord, this holy God?” 1 Samuel 6:20 The people of Beth-shemesh, the levitical clan of the Kohathites, the ones entrusted with the care-taking of the Ark of the Covenant, doing exactly what the Philistines did in recognizing God’s power and trying to get out of His presence. They ask the question, “Who can stand before the LORD, this holy God?”   The leaders of Beth-shemesh decide it would be better to remove the Ark from their location and presence, and move it up the road to a higher location, perhaps a safer location to store the ark since Kiriath-jearim was built on a hill. Apparently the Israelites hadn’t learned the lesson that God can take care of Himself.   But the question still resounds, doesn’t it—Who can stand before the LORD, this holy God?   And the answer we see, not just from this text, but from all the bible, is no one can stand before the LORD based upon their own goodness, their own ideas, their own rejoicing.   We need a mediator. Someone to intervene on our behalf. Eli had failed to do it. Hophni and Phinehas were losers. We need someone to plead on our behalf before the LORD. But now Hophni and Phinehas and Eli were dead. Israel needs a priest, a righteous leader. The answer comes in chapter 7 in the person of Samuel. But Samuel is just a pointer to someone greater.   Psalm 24:3 asks the question, “Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.”   I am not that person. You are not that person. There is not a leader within this building who is that person. Our job is to point you to Jesus, who was, is, and will continue to be that perfect priest.
